DESPITE THE SHSU BEARKATS’ STRUGGLES LATELY IN SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE PLAY, THE KAT BASEBALL TEAM HAS BEEN CRUISING ALONG VERY WELL IN THEIR MID-WEEK NON-CONFERENCE CONTESTS. THE BEARKATS DID IT AGAIN ON TUESDAY WHEN THEY WHIPPED THE 22ND-RANKED TEXAS A&M AGGIES 8-2 IN COLLEGE STATION. THE VICTORY WAS SAM HOUSTON’S 6TH STRAIGHT IN MID-WEEK GAMES – MARKING THE 1ST TIME SAM HOUSTON HAS ACCOMPLISHED THAT PARTICULAR FEAT SINCE 2000. THE KATS WILL CLOSE OUT THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE REGULAR-SEASON WITH A 3-GAME SERIES AGAINST INCARNATE WORD AT DON SANDERS STADIUM. GAMES ARE SET FOR 6:30PM THURSDAY & FRIDAY, AND 1PM ON SATURDAY. THE POST-SEASON CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT BEGINS A WEEK FROM TODAY IN SUGAR LAND.

IN THE CLASS 5A GIRLS’ STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT ON TUESDAY, THE HUNTSVILLE LADY HORNETS IMPROVED ON THEIR 1ST-ROUND SCORE TO MOVE UP AND FINISH IN 8TH PLACE AT THE EVENT AT WOLFDANCER GOLF CLUB IN LOST PINES NEAR BASTROP. GRAPEVINE HIGH SCHOOL WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, WITH KINGWOOD PARK PLACING 2ND. ALSO, FOLLOWING A BREAKOUT SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN WITH THE SHSU BEARKAT WOMEN’S GOLF PROGRAM, JENNA PHILLIPS HAS BEEN NAMED TO THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC WOMEN’S GOLF SQUAD. PHILLIPS POSTED A 4.O GRADE POINT AVERAGE AS A MANAGEMENT MAJOR IN THE SPRING SEMESTER.
