SAM HOUSTON STATE FRESHMAN GOLFER HANNA ALBERTO QUALIFIED MONDAY FOR THE U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER SHOOTING A 2-UNDER 70 AT BAY OAKS COUNTRY CLUB IN HOUSTON. THE SCORE WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO PLACE HER IN A TIE FOR THIRD AND EARNING ONE OF THE SIX ADVANCING SPOTS AT THE SECTIONAL QUALIFIER. GOBEARKATS.COM REPORTS SHE WILL NOW COMPETE IN THE 156-PLAYER FIELD AT SAN DIEGO COUNTRY CLUB, CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA IN AUGUST.

THE NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE HELD THEIR INAUGURAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME MONDAY NIGHT IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. FORMER ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE TEAM JACKSONVILLE SHARKS DEFEATED THE COLUMBUS LIONS, 27-21. IT WAS A FORMER HUNTSVILLE HORNET WHO PUT THE FIRST POINTS ON THE BOARD FOR JACKSONVILLE. FULLBACK DERRICK ROSS, POWERED INTO THE ENDZONE FROM A YARD OUT FOR THE FIRST TOUCHDOWN OF THE GAME. HE FINISHED WITH 8 CARRIES FOR 19 YARDS AND A 24 YARD RECEPTION.
