Vote for Huntsville in the Communities Take Root Program
The City of Huntsville has been chosen as a competitor in the 2012 “Communities Take Root” program – a nationwide initiative to help feed under-served communities and to improve the environment by planting fruit orchard trees free of charge. The program gives cities the chance to collect as many votes as possible from citizens. The voting continues through Aug. 31. The 17 cities that collect the highest number of votes will win the orchards. Huntsville residents may vote daily online.

Club Y Registration
The Huntsville Family YMCA is registering local children for summer camp. “Club ‘Y’” is designed for children ages 6 through 12 – while “Camp Little ‘Y’” is for ages 4 & 5. Weekly sessions begin June 4 and continue throughout the summer. Weekly themes, swimming and field trips will be part of the schedule. Financial assistance is available for families who qualify.

Shot in the Dark Golf Tournament & Helicopter Ball Drop
The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host its 9th annual “Shot in the Dark golf tournament & Helicopter Ball Drop.” The event is set for June 1 at Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville. Registration will begin at 3pm, with tee time set for 4 o’clock. Cost for a 4-golfer team will be $400. Sponsorships are also available.

SHSU Night at Minute Maid Park
The SHSU Alumni Association invites you to join the fun for “SHSU Night at Minute Maid Park.” The night will feature a game between the Houston Astros & the St. Louis Cardinals. A reception is set for 6pm in the park’s “Champions Pavilion.” Game time is 7:05. Bus transportation will depart the Bowers Stadium parking lot on the university campus at 4:30pm.

Little Levi Rodeo
The “Little Levi Rodeo” – for kids ages 5 to 12 – is set for 9am June 2 in the rodeo arena at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Highway 30 West of Huntsville. Ages 5-8 will enter in the “Junior Division,” while ages 9-12 will enter in the “Senior Division.”

SAAFE House Crawfest
The 7th annual “SAAFE House Crawfest” is set for 6pm June 7 at the Walker County Fairgrounds. Cajun crawfish, chicken tenders, corn-on-the-cob, red potatoes & fresh rolls will be on the menu. There will also be live & silent auctions to help raise funds for the SAAFE House in its efforts to help create a sexual-assault & abuse-free environment. Water Aerobics Classes
The City of Huntsville Recreation Services Division will host “water aerobics” classes again this year. The classes will take place from 8 to 9pm Mondays & Wednesdays, and from 8 to 9am Tuesdays & Thursdays. The classes continue through Sept. 13. Classes will take place at the city’s aquatic center on Avenue ‘N’ near downtown Huntsville. There will be a $35 registration fee which covers the whole year.

Fund-Raising Co-Ed Softball Tournament
The “Huntsville Knockouts” 8-U fast-pitch softball team will host a fund-raising co-ed softball tournament June 30 at Josey Field. Each team must include a minimum of 4 females on its roster – with no less than 3 females on the field at all times. The field will be limited to just 8 teams for this 1-day event. Players must be 16 or older. Pre-registration is required.
