Huntsville Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, and must be from low-income families or be children with special needs. Verification of family income, the child’s birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security card and Medicaid card will be required. The Head Start facility is located on FM 980 at FM 247. Registration continues for fall sports at the Huntsville Family YMCA. Youth soccer is for children 3 & 4 years old. Youth volleyball is for kids ages 6 through 14. Youth flag football is for children ages 5 through 12. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. Registration continues through Sept. 2. The YMCA is located on Old Houston Road. The Walker County Master Gardeners organization will host its 5th annual “Butterfly Festival & Fall Plant Sale” from 8am to 2pm Oct. 18. There will be a variety of activities for children & adults. The plant sale will feature an extensive selection of natives, fruit & nut trees, roses, perennials, shade-loving varieties, herbs, day lillies and a wide variety of seeds. The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host its “Senior Health Fair” from 9am to 2pm Sept. 23. The program will take place at the Walker County Storm Shelter on Highway 75 North in Huntsville. This event will be a great opportunity to learn about choices available in health care, assisted living facilities, clubs & volunteer opportunities, and fun ways to stay healthy & active. The Huntsville Youth Soccer Association will host registration sessions for its upcoming fall seasons. The registration opportunities will take place at Carbonero Restaurant on 11th Street. The Huntsville Police Officers Association will host its annual “Team Roping Fundraising event” Oct. 19. The competition will take place at the Walker County Fairgrounds arena on Highway 30 West. There is a $25 entry fee for each competitor. For more information call 291-5497.
The “Hornet Buddies” program is looking for new members. The “Hornet Buddies” consist of Huntsville ISD students from kindergarten through 6th grade who support as a group the Huntsville Hornet football team. Enrollment fee is $25 per member. “Walk-on” tryouts for the SHSU Bearkat football team are set for 5pm Sept. 3 in the team meeting room downstairs in the Mafrige Field House on the University campus on Bowers Boulevard. Hopeful players need to provide their own cleats, workout clothes and a copy of their fall schedule. Players must also be enrolled in at least 12 hours of classes during the fall semester at SHSU, provide proof of health insurance and have undergone a recent physical examination.
