Walker County Fair Association’s annual Barbecue Cookoff- Reservations

January 12 - January 31

Entry forms for the Walker County Fair Association’s annual Barbecue Cookoff are available on the fair’s web page. You can reserve a space at the cookoff by sending in a deposit of $100 by Jan. 31. After Jan. 31, spaces will be available on a 1st-come, 1st-served basis only. The cookoff is set for April 13 & 14. Souper Bowl of Caring

January 12 - February 4

Huntsville Mayor Andy Brauninger and a local grocery store have teamed together to sponsor the “Souper Bowl of Caring” food drive through Feb. 4. The mayor joined with Huntsville H-E-B store on 11th Street at Highway 75 North. You’re being urged to purchase pre-packaged bags of groceries as donations. For more information (936) 291-5403.

Empty Bowls Fundraising Event

January 15 - January 29

In preparation for the upcoming “Empty Bowls” fund-raising event, you’re invited to bowl-making sessions at the Wynne Home Arts Center on 11th Street at Avenue ‘O.’ Volunteers are needed to make pottery bowls which will given away in February at the fund-raiser which will benefit the Walker County Senior Center’s “Meals-on-Wheels” program. Walker County Area Alumni & Friends Club 5th annual scholarship fundraiser

January 22 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The Walker County Area Alumni & Friends Club will host its 5th annual scholarship fundraiser for SHSU students. The event is set for 6:30-9pm Jan. 22 at the Elkins Lake Clubhouse on Cherry Hills Drive. This will be a business-casual event – with SHSU head baseball coach Matt Deggs as the guest speaker. Free Spanish Classes

January 23

The Huntsville Public Library will host free Spanish classes on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 23. This 16-week program will take place in the library’s Community Room. All materials will be provided. Pre-registration is highly recommended. Only 35 students will be allowed in each class. The library is located on Avenue ‘M’ at 14th Street. For more information call (936) 291-5471.

Faces & Places of the Chihuahuan Desert

January 23 - February 25

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will offer an exhibit called “Faces & Places of the Chihuahuan Desert.” The exhibit will be on display at the museum from Jan. 23 through Feb. 25. Introduction to Square Dancing

9th annual Walker County Warrior Project dinner

January 25 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Pre-sale tickets are on sale now for the 9th annual Walker County Warrior Project dinner. The event is set for 5:30pm Jan. 25 at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Highway 30 West. Tickets are $50 each – or a table of 8 for $350. Proceeds from the event help provide services to wounded veterans & their families. A ribeye dinner will be served.
