SHSU Bearkats’ 2016 football season are now available

May 6 - August 31

Season tickets for the SHSU Bearkats’ 2016 football season are now available. Season tickets for the 6 Kat home games – including the annual “Battle of the Piney Woods” contest against Stephen F. Austin at NRG Stadium in Houston – range from $110 to $275. The Sam Houston football season begins Sept. 3 at Bowers Stadium against Oklahoma Panhandle State – and will also include home games against Abilene Christian, Texas Southern, McNeese State & Central Arkansas. Huntsville Mainstreet brings you the “Farmers Market” every Saturday from 8am-noon. The market will be open on University Avenue between 11th & 12th Streets in ]downtown Huntsville. Sam Houston Memorial Museum: “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricaturista.”

Huntsville’s Sam Houston Memorial Museum invites you to its new exhibition: “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricaturista.” Covarrubias was one of the foremost Mexican artists of the 20th century with important contributions in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, theater & dance. The exhibition focuses on the sophisticated caricatures that made Covarrubias famous, providing a unique window into the cultural & political culture of the 1920s & 30s. Sam Houston Memorial Museum-Blue Star Museums program

For the 6th year, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in joining more than 2-thousand museums across America to offer free admission throughout the summer to military personnel & their families. The Blue Star Museums program continues through Labor Day Sept. 5. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays 9am-4:30pm and Sunday noon-4:30pm. Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed

The Senior Center of Walker County is seeking volunteers for its “Meals on Wheels” program. Meals are served Monday through Friday in Huntsville, and on Mondays & Tuesdays in rural areas. City of Huntsville’s Transfer Station

July 6 - July 31

The City of Huntsville’s Transfer Station now accepts credit & debit cards. The transfer station is the site where city residents can drop off their recyclables & garbage. Everything that goes in & out of the facility is tracked through weight. Payments made with credit or debit cards will be charged a processing equal to 2.5 percent of the amount of the payment. Better Choices, Better Health: Diabetes

Huntsville Memorial Hospital – along with the Walker County Healthy Initiatives program – will offer a free diabetes self-management workshop called: “Better Choices, Better Health: Diabetes.”  The program will take place each Tuesday at 10am from July 12 through Aug. 16. The classes are designed to help participants deal with pain, fatigue, stress & depression. Attendees will discover better nutritional & exercise choices, as well as learn how to prevent or delay complications. Class size is limited. Pre-registration is advised.…

New one way streets on SHSU campus

July 13 - August 29

The City of Huntsville – along with SHSU – has converted sections of Bobby K. Marks Drive & Bearkat Boulevard to one-way status. Paid parking spaces will also be added along each section. Signage designating alternate routes is now posted on the east side of the university campus. For more information call (936) 294-5760.

C.O.M.E School Supply Give-away

July 13 - August 6

Huntsville’s Community Organization for Missionary Endeavor (C.O.M.E.) is collecting donations for the annual “School Supply Give-away.” The event is set for Aug. 6, but donations are now being accepted to help children get back to school with the items they need. You may donate items at the organization’s resale shop on Highway 75 North behind the Walker County Senior Center on Highway 75 North. For more information call (936) 295-0617.
