SHSU Bearkat Football Season Opener

September 4

Tickets are now on sale for the SHSU Bearkats’ football season opener Sept. 5 in Lubbock. The Kats will face Texas Tech in the 1st game of the season. Ticket prices for Sam Houston fans will be $35 per person plus a processing fee. The tickets will be for seats in the SHSU visitors’ section at the Texas Tech stadium. (936) 294-1725

Labor Day garbage pick-up routes

September 7

The City of Huntsville’s Solid Waste Services Division will run regular residential & commercial garbage pick-up routes on Labor Day – Sept. 7. The Solid Waste Transfer Facility will also be open on Labor Day. However, the Recycling Drop Off Center will be closed for the holiday, and will re-open Sept. 8. (936) 294-5712

Free Spanish Classes

The popular free Spanish classes are returning to the Huntsville Public Library. Intermediate – and advanced – classes will be offered beginning Sept. 8. Materials will be provided. Cutthroat Chili Cook-off & Underwater Scavenger Hunt

C.A.S.A. – Volunteer Opportunity

C.A.S.A. – Court-Appointed Special Advocates – will offer volunteer training for volunteers who are interested in serving as advocates for neglected, abused & abandoned children who are placed in the foster-care system. Youth Cook-Off

The American Legion Auxiliary of Sam Houston Post No. 95 will host its “Youth Cook-Off” beginning at 9am Sept. 19. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary’s charities. 2015 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition

The world’s best up-&-coming jazz trumpet players will converge on SHSU Sept. 19 to compete for cash prizes during the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. The event is hosted by the university’s School of Music, the International Trumpet Guild, and the Herb Alpert Foundation. The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce is making plans for its “Health & Wellness Fair” scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Walker County Storm Shelter in Huntsville. Sam Houston National Forest Day of Volunteer Service

September 26

A day of volunteer service across the country will be celebrated locally Sept. 26. You’re encouraged to assist others by helping to renovate an interpretive trail in the Sam Houston National Forest. Projects will include: brush cutting, clearing of pond shorelines, pollinator site preparation, bench installation, pier repair, sign installation,; planting seeds, and building & installing bat houses. “Smokey Bear” will also be on hand.
