“Walk-on” tryouts for the SHSU Bearkat football team are set for 5pm Sept. 3 in the team meeting room downstairs in the Mafrige Field House on the University campus on Bowers Boulevard. Hopeful players need to provide their own cleats, workout clothes and a copy of their fall schedule. Players must also be enrolled in at least 12 hours of classes during the fall semester at SHSU, provide proof of health insurance and have undergone a recent physical examination. The Roxie Douglas Scholarship Foundation & Learning Institute will host its 18th Scholarship Banquet on Saturday. The event will take place at the Veterans Conference Center on Highway 75 North across from Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville. For more information call 295-5959.
The Thomas Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual “Labor Day Barbecue.” The event is set for 11am-2pm Sunday, and will take place at the department’s headquarters on FM 3454 off FM 980 east of Riverside. The menu will consist of sliced barbecue brisket, sausage & chicken with all the trimmings. You can eat in or take out. Adult tickets are $9, kids ages 6-10 $4, and children under 6 eat free. The 4th annual “Great Muddy Escape” is set for Oct. 25 at Gen. Sam’s Off-Road Park. This adventure race is a way to promote health & fitness for the Huntsville & Walker County communities, and is a fundraiser for the Huntsville Family YMCA and for the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
