The Huntsville chapter of LULAC – along with Walker County Unidos – will host a “Cinco de Mayo Festival” from 10am to 8pm May 3. The celebration will take place in downtown Huntsville at the Walker County Annex at the corner of University Avenue & 13th Street. Live entertainment, live music, children’s activities, food, arts & crafts will all be featured, leading up to a street dance during the evening hours. For more information, call 295-0223.

A benefit & animal-adoption event for the Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter is set for 9am to 3pm May 17. The event will take place at Kate’s Trade Days on Highway 190 east of Huntsville. The shelter is in need of donated goods, including 4-, 8- & 13-gallon trash bags, paper towels, bathroom tissue and contractor-bag sizes of laundry detergent. The City of Huntsville’s Recreation Services Department is partnering with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to offer another season of the Outdoor Explorer program at Huntsville State Park. You’re encouraged to attend the next session at 9am May 24 to learn about hiking, biking and kayaking. Park entrance is $5 for adults, and free for those 12 & under. Classes are also scheduled for June 21, July 19, Aug. 23 & Sept. 20. Pre-registration is helpful. The state park is located south of Huntsville on Park Road 40. For more information, call 294-5725.
