Baby Can Wait, Talking Can’t

Huntsville’s “Up2YOUth Coalition” will host a community meeting – “Baby Can Wait, Talking Can’t.” The purpose of the event is to get the Huntsville community involved in making decisions regarding their children’s education – and will feature experts speaking on topics such as risk-taking behaviors of teens, pregnancy prevention based on evidence, and sexually transmitted infections. Huntsville Public Library Easter Egg Hunt

April 1 @ 11:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Huntsville Public Library will host an Easter Egg Hunt for pre-schoolers. The event is set for 11:30am April 1. Meet at the library’s Community Room then walk to the park behind Huntsville City Hall for the event. Children will need to provide their own Easter basket. For more information call 291-5472.

SHSU Distinguished Lecturer Series- Dawn Porter

Lawyer-turned-filmmaker Dawn Porter will be the featured speaker at the next installment of the Distinguished Lecturer Series at SHSU. The presentation is set for April 1 in the Mafrige Auditorium of the university’s Smith-Hutson Business Building. Porter’s award-winning documentary “Gideon’s Army” will be shown at 2pm, followed by her lecture at 3:30. The event is free. For more information call 294-1837.

Citizenship Preparation Course

April 2 - April 30

The Huntsville Public Library – in conjunction with SHSU – will present a 5-week “Citizenship Preparation Course.” The course will take place each Thursday in April in the library’s Community Room. The course is designed to prepare immigrants for the U.S. Naturalization Test – and will cover the application process, oral interviews & exam. All materials will be provided. Space is limited. Huntsville’s Solid Waste Division Heavy Trash Service Announcement

April 3

Effective April 3, customers who contact the City of Huntsville’s Solid Waste Division for “Heavy Trash Service” will have a $25 charge added to their city utility account bill each time the service is utilized. This service is for residential customer only with an active utility account. A call-in is required. Heave trash service is for furniture, appliances, piles of brush not to exceed 4 feet high, or limbs no larger than 12 inches in diameter and cut to no more…

City of Huntsville’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division- No collections on Good Friday

April 3

The City of Huntsville’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division will not be collecting curbside residential recycling on April 3 in observance of Good Friday. Only commercial customers with dumpsters will have garbage collected on that day. The Solid Waste Disposal & Recycling Facility will also be closed April 3. For more information call 294-5743.

Walker County Fair & Rodeo will host its annual Mutton Bustin

April 4 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Walker County Fair & Rodeo will host its annual “Mutton Bustin’” contest at 4pm April 4. The event will take place in the fairgrounds’ rodeo arena on Highway 30 West. The contest is open to kids from 4 through 6 years old – and contestants must weigh less than 55 pounds to be eligible. Registration is limited to the 1st 60 children to sign up. Boy Scout Merit Badge weekend

April 10 - April 12

Huntsville’s Boy Scout Troop 114 will host a “Scout Merit Badge” weekend for all local & surrounding-area scouts. The event is set for April 10-12. The troop’s Josey Scout Lodge – located on South Sam Houston Avenue at 22nd Street – needs local & area businesses to assist with donations of several types of items. 8th Annual City of Huntsville’s Electronics Recycling Day

The 8th Annual City of Huntsville’s “Electronics Recycling Day” is set for 9am to noon April 11. The event will take place at the city’s disposal & recycling facility on I-45 North. Items accepted will include laptops, notebooks, printers, scanners, copiers, projectors, televisions, computer accessories, radios, cell phones, pagers, cameras, PDAs, rechargeable batteries and vehicle batteries.  This year’s event will be expanded to include household hazardous waste disposal. City of Huntsville/Roberts Aquatic Center- Water Aerobics Classes

April 13

Join the City of Huntsville at the Roberts Aquatic Center for the return of “water aerobics.” Classes will take place Mondays through Wednesdays from 8-9am, and Mondays through Thursdays from 8-9pm. Participants must be at least 18. There is a $55 fee for the year – or a day pass may be purchased for $4. Classes will being April 13. Registration is necessary before classes begin.
