The Walker County Historical Commission will celebrate its 50th anniversary as part of its regular monthly meeting. The event is set for 5:30pm Nov. 18, and will take place at the Gibbs-Powell Home Museum on 11th Street at Avenue ‘M’ in Huntsville. The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host their annual “Christmas in the Pines” 5K & 10K Run/Walk Dec. 7. Registration will begin at 7am, with the race beginning at 8am at the SHSU Health & Kinesiology Center. Awards will be given to overall male & female winners in each age bracket. The Walker County “Go-Texan” Day is set for Nov. 23 at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Highway 30 West. Registration will begin at 7:30am, with family oriented events & competition planned throughout the day. You can sign up for horseshoes, washers & domino games. You’re invited to help celebrate the 238th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. The local celebration will take place beginning at 11:30am Nov. 8 at the H.E.A.R.T.S. The U.S. Postal Service in Huntsville invites you to participate in “Operation Santa” – an effort to collect used bicycles, in any condition, to distribute to less fortunate children during the upcoming holiday season. The bikes will be re-conditioned, and Postal Service employees will then distribute the bikes to area children who would otherwise not have a gift for Christmas. Drop-off locations are located at both Huntsville Post Offices – on 10th Street at Ave. ‘N’ and on Highway 30 West at Veterans Memorial Parkway. For more information, call 662-9167.
Huntsville-area children from ages 4 through 14 can register online for the upcoming season of Huntsville Little Dribblers basketball. Cost is $70 per player through Nov. 15. The City of Huntsville’s Recreation Services Division will host “Zumba” classes each Tuesday & Thursday at 5:30pm. The classes will take place in the 5th-grade gymnasium at Huntsville Intermediate School on Highway 190 East. “Zumba” is a Latin-based aerobic fitness class with an individual twist. The Huntsville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is hosting a “Silent Wreath Auction.” The auction will continue through noon Friday. Wreaths will be displayed in the hospital lobby and in adjacent corridors. Bidding tables will be provided to accept bids in increments of $5. Payment will be by cash or check – no credit cards will be accepted. Funds raised will benefit projects & scholarships awarded to high school students entering the field of health care.
