Tenth grade. That was Kimberly Perry’s favorite year of school. Because, as The
Band Perry
vocalist told me last week, that was the year she realized music was what she was meant to do. “My dad told
me, ‘Do not have a fall-back plan, or you’re gonna fall back on it,'” she recalled. “So 10th grade was the year that I got
a lot of focus about what I wanted in life and what I was good at. I had tried everything — ballet, basketball and cross
country. But then my high school buddies and I started a band, and we would just go over to somebody’s house after school
about four times a week just to play music and practice and figure out how the heck to be a band.” She called 10th grade a
defining moment in her life.

When I asked if she looked forward to all the back-to-school frenzy as a kid, she said
she loved the schedule of it all. “I like every day to feel the same way and look the same way, so school did that for me,”
she said. But she was never a fan of getting up early. “I think we all need to start a petition for school to start at 10
in the morning,” Perry said. “Why does the whole world get up so early? I think we should all stay up later and sleep a little
in later.”
