OFFSTAGE: Scotty McCreery Makes Clear Decision

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

The title track on Scotty McCreery’s
debut album is called “Clear as Day.” It’s about teenagers drinking and driving. Over the weekend, I asked McCreery, 18, how
he avoided the pressure to go down that wrong path in high school.

“I could never get over wanting to have control
over my body. Not having control was just never my thing,” he told me. “And so I just stayed away from it. If you’re away
from it, you can’t get caught into it. If you have your mind made up before you get into those situations, it’s pretty easy
to say no.”

That’s sage advice from a man so young. But I think surrounding himself with like-minded teenagers was
also key to his smart decision-making.

“I had friends who were in that lifestyle, I guess. But not my close friends.
The friends I hung out with the most and spend most of my time with, we are just not into that stuff. We don’t have any interest,”
he said.

Written by Casey Beathard, Phil O’Donnell and Adam Wheeler, the song is one of my favorites on the album.
Because of McCreery’s spin on it, yes, but also because the message that one wrong choice (“I walked you to your brother’s
Silverado/When he climbed behind the wheel he seemed OK”) is all it takes to turn a post-game party into a tragedy.
