No country artists won any big trophies at Thursday night’s (Sept. 6) MTV
Video Music Awards, but Taylor Swift did get a pretty cool prize.
She got to close the show with her first
live performance of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” It was very well done, with all the innocence and drama
you need to pull off a song like this. (Or, as MTV.com put it so well, “She doesn’t get mad, she gets even, and she gets adorable.”)
Adorable is right — right down to her little red oxfords. Towering stilettos just would not have fit the tune’s better-off-without-you-so-I’m-having-a-dance-party-with-my-friends
message. And like the artists before her who performed throughout the two-hour broadcast, Swift ended the song with a split-second
stage dive that sent her momentarily into the hands of the fans. Which I thought was very brave of her, considering she told
MTV last week she is kind of averse to taking risks. Swift and host Sway were playing Never Have I Ever, and she admitted,
“I don’t like to get hurt or injured, and I feel like with skydiving and bungee jumping, as much fun as that would be, it’s
like this much fun in my head and this much room for injury.” Just before the show, Swift tweeted, “VMA dressing room report:
exceptional snack selection. SCORE.” Not as cool as a trophy, but still.
