With hits like “I Like It, I Love It” and “Indian Outlaw,” it might come as a surprise that Tim McGraw once said he prefers recording ballads to uptempo songs because he finds it harder to find uptempo songs he likes. But the music he’s shared from his upcoming album, current single “Truck Yeah” and “Mexicoma,” hints he may be having a change of heart.

“The key is finding good ones,” Tim said. That doesn’t mean a song has to be deep or life-changing. “There’s always a place for ones that don’t say a whole lot that are just fun, too. I’ve had a few of those and I have no problem with those,” he continued. “It’s like, I go to the movie, I like to have some chocolate covered peanuts, but I also like a heavy movie. And there’s places for all of it.”

For Tim, the key is to find the best songs, regardless of the tempo. It’s not just his music where he looks for the best material though. It’s a lesson he’s learned to carry throughout other areas of his life.

“Whether you’re doing a movie, singing a song, building a house, no matter what you’re doing you have to start with good material,” he said. “‘Cause a lot of people can swing a hammer, a lot of people can sing a song and a lot of people can go show up and be in a movie, but if you’re not picking good material, starting the project out with a great song or a great script or a great board then the end result’s not gonna be what you want it to be.”

“Truck Yeah” is currently at radio. Tim and Kenny Chesney’s Brothers of the Sun Tour runs through the end of August, wrapping with a two-night stand at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
