First Execution Using Single Drug

Published on July 19, 2012 by Larry Crippen

At 6:37 last night, 33-year-old Yokamon Hearn became the first TDCJ Death Row inmate to be executed by a single drug. According to reports, he did not appear to have any unusual reaction to the drug.

Hearn had been sentenced to be executed for the 1998 carjacking and murder of 23-year-old Frank Meziere of Plano. The single drug administered to execute Hearn, pentobarbital, was decided upon by TDCJ officials following the shortage of one drug and the unavailability of another previously used in a three-drug combination.
