GoBearkats.com – Britni Martin scored 22 points and Sequeena Thomas added 15 points and 16 rebounds as the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-56 Southland Conference victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday.
Sam Houston (9-7, 4-1) trailed by two points with 12:18 remaining in the first half but roared back to take a 31-25 lead at intermission. The Bearkats led by as many as 16 points in the second half, outscoring the Islanders 34-31 in the second period.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-12, 2-3) was led by Alisa Roberts with 18 points.
The Bearkat women dominated under the boards, out-rebounding the Islanders 50-33 and out-scoring TAMUCC 26-20 in the paint.
Jasmine Johnson also was in double figures for the Bearkats with 11 points. The Bearkat defense limited Corpus Christi to 32.1 percent shooting, totaled 11 steals and forced 23 Islander turnovers.
Martin was 5-of-12 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 at the line. The 12th player in Sam Houston women’s basketball history to score more than 1,000 points, Martin raised her three-year scoring total to 1,029 with the performance.
