Sequeena Thomas and Chanice Smith each scored 12 points and Britni Martin added 10 as the Sam Houston women’s basketball team fell to Missouri 66-48 Friday night at Mizzou Arena.
Sam Houston (4-6) led by as many as seven points early in the game and trailed by one point, 28-27, at intermission. But Missouri (10-1) outscored the Bearkats 38-21 in the second period to earn the victory.
The Tigers hit 27-of-55 from the field for 49.1 percent while holding Sam Houston to 24.2 percent shooting, 16-of-66, for the game. Missouri blocked seven Kat shots.
Sam Houston exploded to an 8-1 lead as Smith hit two three-point shots and Thomas made a layup in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game.
Missouri bounced back with a 13-2 run to build a 14-10 margin after a Morgan Eye trey with 12:06 left in the first period.
The Bearkat women jumped back in front one more time after a Smith free throw 25-24 with 3:11 to go in the first half.
Missouri out-scored SHSU 16-2 in the first seven minutes of the second half as Christine Flores gave the Tigers a 43-29 lead with 12:57 to play.
Sam Houston held its own on the boards with the Tigers as Missouri held a slim 43-39 margin in the final rebound totals. The Bearkats pulled down 18 offensive boards, scoring 10 of their 27 points in the first half on second chance baskets.
The SHSU defense also forced 16 Missouri turnovers while the Bearkats committed only 11 miscues.
Thomas led the Bearkats under the boards with eight rebounds. Martin added six and Angela Beadle and Smith each totaled five boards.
