SOFTBALL: Splits A Doubleheader Against UTSA

Published on April 06, 2012 by Eric 'WizKid' Odom Hilary Adams became the eighth Sam Houston softball player to hit two home runs in a single game as the Bearkats split a Southland Conference doubleheader with UTSA Saturday.

The Roadrunners won the first game 6-3 but Sam Houston bounced back for an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

Sam Houston took an 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opening game Friday as shortstop Sarah Allison singled to score Tori Benvidez. The center field singled and moved into scoring position on an error.

UTSA evened the game with a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Caitlyn Ivy. The Roadrunners took the lead with a pair of runs in the four on a two-run single by Megan Low.

Third baseman Shelbi Tucker cut the margin to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The play scored Allison who had doubled.

But the Roadrunners put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth including a three-run homer by Alaina Byars.

The Bearkats came back strong in the first inning of the nightcap as Allison hit a run-scoring double then scored on a wild pitch and Hilary Adams had a solo home run.

Northwestern State put three runs on the board to tie the contest 3-3 after one. Kim Damian put the Bearkats back ahead with an RBI single in the top of the second.

Tucker homered to left field to add two more runs for SHSU in the top of the third. Another home run by Adams brought in two more runs to put the Kats up 8-3 in the top of the fifth.

Tomi Garrison was the losing pitcher in the first game while Shelby Lancaster was the game winner in the second.
