GoBearkats.com / Huntsville – Sequeena Thomas scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds and Britni Martin added 20 points as Sam Houston State defeated Texas State University-San Marcos 68-54 in the final regular season Southland women’s basketball game for both teams Saturday afternoon.
The gives the Bearkats a 17-10 season record and their 12-4 league mark gives Sam Houston its highest seed ever (third) in its 13 trips to the Southland Conference post-season tournament.
The Bearkats never trailed, jumping out to a 17-5 lead in the opening five minutes. Sam Houston led by as many as 19 points in the first half and were up 21 with 7:57 to play.
The Bobcats (16-13, 8-8) were led by Demi Clinch with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The victory extended Sam Houston’s winning streak to four games, their longest this season.
The 42 points by the two junior forwards marked Martin’s 23rd double figure performance of the year and Thomas’s 19th. Thomas has produced double figure points and rebounds in 17 games this year.
Martin also added a career high 11 assists. The Conroe product was 8-of-16 from the field including 4-of-10 three point attempts.
Jasmin Wiley scored nine points and Jasmine Johnson added six points.
Senior guards Khamra Echols and Devin Wombles, making their final appearances at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, scored two and four points, respectively.
