AFSCME & Civil Rights Project Press Conference in Austin Today

Published on August 29, 2013 by Larry Crippen

Local AFSCME correctional employees union President Lance Lowry has informed us that this morning at 10 AFSCME Correctional Employees and the Texas Civil Rights Project will hold a joint press conference in Austin.

The press conference will be held to discuss the deaths and heat illnesses caused in the Texas prison system, which lacks climate control or air conditioning. According to Lowry’s press release, preventable deaths of 14 people and the countless illnesses of many more have resulted as the State of Texas continues to ignore proper funding. He reports the Texas Department of Criminal Justice recently funded $750,000 worth of climate control for their pig barns.

Lowry says correctional employees and inmates may not agree on much, but one thing they can agree on is Texas prisons are too hot and that inhumane conditions exist for officers as well as inmates. He said Texas prisons experience more psychiatric emergencies during the extreme heat.

Lowry says both the employee’s union and the Texas Civil Rights Project seek remedies to resolve excessive heat conditions in Texas prisons.
