HISD Board Discusses Long-Range Facilities Planning

Published on January 25, 2013 by Larry Crippen

Students, staff, and board members were recognized at last night’s HISD Board of Trustee session at the High School.

Superintendent, Dr. Steve Johnson, addressed the on-going effort on long-range facilities planning.

Under the new plan, Huntsville Intermediate and Huntsville Elementary would turn into a full-day pre-K through 2nd grade facilities.  Stewart and Samuel Walker Houston Elementary would undergo modification to 3rd through 5th grades. Gibbs pre-K Center and Scott Johnson Elementary would be closed. The Mance Park Middle School would house the District Administration and Support Services building.

Further options include constructing a new middle school for grades 6 through 8. Dr. Johnson said they continue to consult with architects to arrive at costs for the proposed changes. At a Board workshop planned for February 7th, the Superintendent hopes to have the figures on bond costs and the revenue needed for facility changes.
