The $650,000 deal on the 2.5 acres of the Miltary Reserve Building location has been completed between the City and Maalouf Properties.
The building and land had been a bone of contention over its purchase between the City, Maalouf Properties, and Sam Houston State University officials. Tarek Maalouf had filed a bid on time for the property, while the university had not, but said they were not notified of the bidding process properly.
Initially, the university mentioned the possibility of moving on the property through eminent domain, but eventually, because the land tract had not been delineated from next door property in time before a meeting, the Texas State University System Regents authorized the university to buy the property through negotiation.
However, although the deal has closed, eminent domain action by the university remains an option.
