Military Reserve Building Issues Continue

Published on August 13, 2013 by Larry Crippen

The issues over the purchase of the abandoned Military Reserve Building on Sam Houston Avenue continue.

The Texas State University Board of Regents will meet Thursday and Friday in Alpine to consider whether to use eminent domain to condemn the property or purchase the property from Tarek Maloouf, which, following a bidding process, was put under contract with Maalouf Properties for a price of $650,000. The university did not participate in the bidding process. The university says the city did not notify them of bid requirements after the city had been informed of their interest in purchasing the property.

The university wishes to use the property for expansion of their veterans and ROTC programs. Mr. Maalouf believes commercial use of the property would contribute financially to the city’s tax revenue.

No public comment will be forthcoming from the regents until they vote.
