Lighter handguns that carry more bullets and feature less recoil will be issued to new Texas troopers completing their training in January.
DPS Spokesman Tom Vinger said the pistol is a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun. Troopers already on the job will be allowed to carry their .357 pistols while the department expands availability of the new weapon.
The new handgun can carry 17 rounds, with an additional round in the chamber. The new gun weighs 24 ounces.
