“Political Theatre” Monday Night at City Hall

Published on September 24, 2013 by Larry Crippen

It was pure political theatre starring Ward #3 Councilmember Ron Allen at City Hall in Huntsville Monday night.

A special session ensued last night to reconsider two agenda items from the September 17th Council meeting in which it was discovered that there had been violations of Rules of Procedure.

When the council last week decided not to amend their decision to give approval to a full-time position for a Main Street Coordinator who would also be an Historic Preservation Officer and a part-time administrative assistant at the Wynne Home, along with the final passage of the budget document, two motions by Councilmember Joe Emmett to “call the question” on the items were not seconded and voted on by councilmembers. This violated the “Rules of Procedure.”

Councilmember Allen played a video of a section of the council session in which he felt Councilmember Emmett was trying to interrupt him before he was through. Also on the video, Emmett was seen passing a note to City Secretary Lee Woodward and Councimember Johnson was seen attempting to get the mayor’s attention to Joe Emmett raising his hand, at one point, by saying “Joe.”

Allen felt his first amendment rights were violated . . . .

At the close of the meeting we asked Councilmember Emmett his view of what transpired at the evening’s session . . . .

We also asked Councilmember Johnson for his take on the matter . . . .
