HISD held a bond-planning workshop last night in the Huntsville High School auditorium. Interested citizens were on hand to ask questions and make suggestions to any future bond proposal.
Those attending viewed a slide presentation on important planning considerations for HISD facilities which presented all kinds of facility challenges from out-of-date electrical and technology capabilities to lack of ADA compliance. Long-range student growth and HISD’s aging facilities were presented in graphs to give a clearer understanding of the need to begin tackling the district’s issues now.
One possible suggestion given among many was eliminating the Scott Johnson and Gibbs facility, moving those students to other facilities, and constructing a new facility for 7th and 8th grades. Superintendent Johnson explained that HISD is subject to a “unique tax base” because of all the untaxed state occupied land in our county.
Dr. Johnson emphasized their primary purpose in a future bond . . . .
HISD bond-planning workshops scheduled for the future are Monday, February 3rd at 6:30 PM in the Gibbs Pre-K Cafeteria; Monday, February 10th at 6:30 PM in the Huntsville Intermediate Cafeteria; and Monday, February 17th at 5:30 PM in the Hawkins Administration Building.
