Having an adequate number of staff of experienced prosecutors is important to the timely prosecution of crimes in any Texas county.
At the May 9th Montgomery County Commissioners’ Court meeting, District Attorney Brett Ligon addressed commissioners on the difficulty of retaining prosecutors. He said, “In the last calendar year we’ve lost ten prosecutors—that’s 20% of our workforce.”
He passed along that Homeland Security has paid 12-week maternity leave.
After further discussion, as one way to help remedy the prosecutor attrition rate the court approved using contingency funds to allow $6,000 annual base pay increases to District Attorney prosecutors and $3,000 annual pay increases to county attorneys through the end of this year. No paid maternity leave program was considered for approval.
