Community Impact reports that the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance has begun the Hurricane Beryl Recovery Fund. Montgomery County will be one of three other counties—Harris, Fort Bend and Waller—who will benefit from funds distributed to disproportionately vulnerable populations and zip codes.
At a July 15th news conference, officials said The Greater Houston Disaster Alliance, a joint disaster partnership, kicked-off the fund to take care of uninsured or underinsured residents. Back in 2023 the alliance was formed in partnership with the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the United Way of Greater Houston.
Co-chair of the alliance’s Disaster Recovery Council, Bob Harvey, said the fund has benefited from over $3 million in donations, via $1 million funding promises from CenterPoint Energy Foundation, Sarofim Foundation and H-E-B.
Those interested can contribute to the fund through credit card on the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance website, by bank transfer or a check mailed to the Hurricane Beryl Recovery Fund at United Way of Greater Houston.
At the conference, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said volunteers are needed for tree removal, food distribution and helping with other major nonprofit and government operations. To signup, call 211. Also, people in need of assistance should call the 24/7 211 hotline to get hooked up with resources.
