The Courier of Montgomery County reports that a tax rate increase for 2025 plus a $466 million budget has been approved by Montgomery County Commissioners. The budget includes more law enforcement personnel and cost-of-living raises for employees.
On September 6th, the budget was approved in a 3 to 1 vote. Commissioner James Noack was absent from the meeting and Commissioner Matt Gray voted against it.
The new budget is higher than 2024’s budget of $432.6 million. It is also higher than the preliminary budget for 2025 of $454 million.
The court also voted for an increase of the current tax rate of 36.96 cents to 37.90 cents.
The new tax rate will cost taxpayers an additional $119 a year according to Tax-Assessor-Collector Tammy McRae.
The County is growing. The U.S. Census Bureau on July 1, 2023 estimated the county’s population at 711,354. The county’s population in 2022 was 679,554. The population was 650,755 in 2021.
With the higher budget, County Judge Keough said the county will be in a position to add 23 full-time along with seven law enforcement positions.
