At the last regular meeting of the Huntsville ISD Board of Trustees, the demolition of the Gibbs Pre-K building was discussed.
A slide presentation, along with Superintendent Sheppard’s accompanying comments said, “After the closure of Gibbs Pre-K Center, the idea was to convert our facility into a remodeled Support and Learning Center to replace the spaces lost in the Mance Park Middle School renovations.”
The slide presentation also passed along that, “Once the bond passed and the district hired general contractors for construction, the Gibbs building was reassessed by our new partners. It was determined the building condition did not lend itself to renovation at any reasonable cost, so the Board approved a revision to the original bond plan, relocating the Support and Learning Center to the old Scott Johnson Elementary building, with a decision of what to do with Gibbs pending further study.”
Superintendent Sheppard told trustees.
He added, “Retaining the property should remain a priority for the district as that location is ideal for future district expansion.”
The Board voted to demolish the building, so as not to be an eyesore, and keep ownership of the property.
