The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Conroe’s Veterans park is getting more funding for more displays.
Dedicated on Memorial Day 2021, the park is located on the southeast corner of the major intersection of Texas 105 and Interstate 45 heading into downtown. Most importantly the park exists to honor the fallen soldiers from Montgomery County, as well as those who served in the military.
It’s a very visible site featuring a row of patriotic flags, two large ponds, a large digital sign and a new two-story building under construction.
First dedicated in 1976, the original park was located next to the tax office in downtown Conroe. A
U.S. Marine Corp veteran injured in service, Jimmie C. Edwards III, spearheaded the effort to move the park to a more visible location.
In August, the Conroe Industrial Development Corporation voted to give the Veterans Memorial Commission $100,000 as it completes the new visitor and education center scheduled for fall. The parks high visibility and ability to draw visitors is one of the reasons for approval of funds.
The funds from the Development Corporation will be used to buy owner furnishing, exhibit and collection displays, fixtures and equipment, as well as technology for the media room at the Honored Mission Hall within the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park Center.
With assistance from State Representative Will Metcalf, it was announced in June of 2021 the park would be getting $7 million from Texas Parks and Wildlife to fund the next phase of the park, the education center. Construction on the center got underway in November of 2023.
