The Courier of Montgomery County reports that On Tuesday Conroe ISD Superintendent Curtis Null received a standing ovation following his announcement that he was withdrawing a recommendation to bring to an end the Two-Way Immersion Dual Language Program. He apologized to those in attendance for the lack of transparency.
Null’s withdrawal of the program came after dozens of frustrated residents spoke to the board of trustees in regard to the district’s plan to eliminate the program without giving notice.
Sunsetting the program, according to school officials, would save the district $1.2 million yearly.
District Deputy Superintendent Bethany Medford said the future of the program became a concern as teacher recruitment, funding and enrollment declined. There are nine teacher vacancies in the program, according to Medford, with 31 on emergency permits.
The dual language program began in 2016 at CISD. It has an enrollment of around 510 students.
